Rotary Club of Anna Nagar Madras was chartered on April 12th 1982. The club was sponsored by Rotary Club of Madras West, initiated by PDG Bhoja Shetty, who then became the Governor’s Special Representative of the club. PP Muthiah donned the Charter President collar, and the meetings were conducted at Queen’s Hotel, Nungambakkam and after a few years the venue was shifted to Connemara. Thereafter, the club shifted venue a couple of times and at present the club meets at Presidency Club.
Each avenue of service was never overlooked by every President who held the mantel. Club service has ensured that fellowship and bonding have remained the club’s stronghold through the years. Regular meetings were vibrant mix of family participation nights and address by renowned speakers from all walks of life.
Under Vocational Service the club has recognized myriads of professionals from the community and lauded them for their contribution to society. For the Sake of Honour Award has been conferred on the likes of Mr (late) Manmohan Singh, Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Dr Sowmya Swaminathan et al.
Community Service Projects were two-fold – one focusing on Development and the other on Health. The club has constructed classrooms for Government Schools, provided computers, built community hall etc. Health camps which benefitted a large number of people from the lower strata were conducted by the doctors who were members of the club.
The club has a sister club in Malaysia, Rotary Club of Damansara. The club has done various projects in association with its sister club both in India and in Malaysia.
Rotary Club of Anna Nagar Madras has an active and vibrant youth component under its wing. With 8 Interact Clubs and 2 Rotaract Clubs, the club is focused on fostering the next generation of community leaders. RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is conducted, every year for the Interact clubs to provide opportunities to all interactors.
